The novel The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer is a great book for young teens. This book is realistic fiction and has intense moments that is very interesting. There were always parts of the book that is suspenseful until the outcome is found. This keeps a reader interested and they might not want to put the book down. Reactions readers have during the novel is that they will not stop reading the book because it is so action-filled. After the novel, readers are left in suspense because Matt starts a project, and they never continue the book as he does the major project. The novel, however was very interesting and the novel deserves a high rating. The novel is about a young boy, Matt, and how he grows up. He is taken care of a woman named Celia. One day when Matt stays at home, like usual, he sees two young adults outside. As he was supposed to hide in his room, he is curious and stays by a window. Matt, the protagonist, is a small boy and undergoes a lot of adventures to get him where he is now. He lives with Celia, a woman who takes care of him. Steven and Emilia come to his house one day, exploring, and Matt is interested in them. The next day they bring Mariá with them, who eventually becomes one of Matt’s closest and best friend. Rosa, a maid who takes care of him, holds him hostage for months. He is rescued by El Patron, an old man who owns Opium, he later becomes an antagonist of the novel, trying to take Matt’s brain. The Álcrans, including Feliciá, Tom, Benito, Steven, and Emilia, who are all antagonists, all hate Matt and try to hurt him except Él Viejo, who is a very nice man. Tam Lin is his bodyguard and tries to protect him from many things. He ends up meeting Chacho, Ton-Ton and Felipé, who are his friends at the orphanage.
