Introduction Hot and cold packs are used by athletes daily in the industry. A soccer player might twist his ankle, as a result his joint might swell up from the excruciating pain. This enlargement of the body part is primarily due to because due to fluid accumulation in the inflicted area, either in the joints (effusion) or in the tissue (edema). To prevent swelling after a muscle or a joint sprain, a hot or cold pack is applied directly onto the skin of the injured body part. A cold pack has two components, a bag containing water and a bag containing a heat-absorbing salt. You can break the bag of water by squeezing on the pack, and the now the water can dissolve the salt contained in the pack. In a cold pack, this reaction of water and the salt is an endothermic reaction, as the heat from the surroundings is taken into the system and lowers the overall temperature of the pack to the point where it feels ice cold, thus the name ice pack. Doctors however recommend- you do not apply the cold pack directly to your skin, as it can be the cause of frostbite.
