Societies have many ways to pass down their culture to their future generations. Oral tradition is one technique to pass down historical events within a society. Many have debated that history being passed down orally is not scientifically accurate or useful. In a way, oral tradition could find a path for leading evidence of an extinct culture. The Hopi are located in Northeastern Arizona and have more than sixty clans. In each clan, there is a totemic figure to represent them. They are a kin-based society, following a maternal lineage. As the Hopi clans move around their territories, they create strong relations with other tribes. Thus, creating a social network and keeping the name of their tribe alive. There are two types of clan systems, in order to create a network of relations. One is called a localized clan system, they are organized and are recognized in a specific area. Every tribe performs ceremonies to establish that they live there. After a while, they can reserve that territory for their future migrations. Reserving the territory that they want allows them to collect resources from the environment that they need. The tribes make a social identity by contributing to the village to keep its history intact by other tribes and keep their ancestral migration routes. They contribute into politics within the village in order to establish their word as a clan in the village. A tribe needs to establish an identity in order to keep their traditional migration patterns. These groups of people travel around contiounsly in the same route because they do not want to use up their resources. They stay at places they are more associated with because as they are creating memories for their tribes, they are able to go back to a territory to stay at and collect
