Homelessness is not just a social statistic and whilst it has been the subject of much research, there is a lack of information regarding the perceptions and experiences of the homeless people. Furthermore, this is evidenced by (Somerville p.386) in his research on understanding homelessness, he states ‘there have been relatively few studies that focus on the life histories of homeless people’, although according to May ‘a recovery of those stories [is] essential if studies of homelessness are not to continue to deny homeless people an identity and agency beyond only their position as “homeless”’( May 2000, p.615 cited in Somerville) Somerville further believes that the key to understanding homelessness is knowing the whole life story directly
