Hodgkin Lymphoma Hodgkin’s lymphoma is an immune disease that is defined as a clonal malignancy that arise from B-cells of germinal and post germinal centres. Witkowska, M., et al. (2015). Hodgkin’s lymphoma is a distinct type of lymphoma firstly recognized and described by Thomas Hodgkin in 1832, (Rubin, et al. 2011).Thomas discovered lymphomas in lymph nodes and they were named after him. They are two types of Hodgkin Lymphoma, one is classical Hodgkin lymphoma and another type is nodular lymphocyte predominant lymphoma. In this talk I will focus mainly on immunological mechanisms of HL as well as its clinical implications and I will conclude with future therapies of the disease. Normally the lymph node is the site of B cell activation and differentiation into plasma cells that secretes antibodies. Hodgkin lymphoma in the lymph nodes is…show more content…
Classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is the most common type of HL, it constitutes of 90 to 95% of all HL cases. In this type of HL Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells are found in the lymph nodes. Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (lpHL) contribute by 5 to 10% cases of HL.In this type of HL most of the lymphocytes that are found in the lymph nodes aren’t cancerous and no Reed-Sternberg cells found in the lymph nodes either. With the right course of treatment Hodgkin Lymphoma is manageable and even curable up to a point. HL are treated with a combination of radio therapy and chemotherapy depending on which stage of or type of HL they have. Chemotherapy is the primary course of treatment, in this case drugs are given to patients to kill cancer cells. During chemotherapy patients can be given the ABVD drugs (Adriamycin,Bleomycin,Vinblastin, and Dacarbazine). This type of treatment is combined with radiotherapy where cancer cells containing lymph nodes are targeted and destroyed by high energy x -rays.
