Mesopotamia was the first ancient civilization located in modern day Iraq that started around 3000 B.C., it fulfilled the five characteristics necessary for a successful civilization, some of them including complex institutions, advanced cities, specialized workers, record keeping, advanced technology. Mesopotamia serves as a model for civilization because its population was able to develop all five characteristics, three of the most significant include complex institutions, advanced cities, and specialized workers. For example, around 3000 B.C., Sumerian scribes (a scribe is a professional record keeper) invented a system of writing called Cuneiform. Scribes wrote with a stylus which had a wedge shaped point and carved the lettering a clay tablet that was baked to preserve the writing. The scribes wrote about wars, natural disasters, and dynasties. The Sumerian scribes were the first to record a written history of a city. This an example of a specialized worker because a scribe is someone who specializes in a certain area of expertise. (D) Next, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world is actually located in Mesopotamia. This was The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This beautiful structure was built in circa 600 B.C. by many builders and architects. The structure was ordered to be built by the king for his homesick bride. In order to create such an outstanding structure, many builders were needed. They were 100 feet tall and 400 feet in width, and filled with plants. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were destroyed in an earthquake sometime after the 1st century AD. This an example of specialized workers because an architect is not someone who does an “everyday job”. (H) To end with, the social classes were a big part of the Sumerian society.
