Unit Three Essay: A Courageous Courtier One of the common qualities shared by all the heroes we have studied from the Anglo-Saxon period through the Renaissance is courage. There are many definitions of the word courage. To me courage means not letting your fears hold you back, like Ambrose Redmoon said, "courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." One quality of a person that obtains courage is the ability to get yourself to take action in spite of fear, another ability of a courageous person is taking action even though there is an emotion or feeling present that ranges somewhere from mild concern and terror, one quality that a courageous person would lack is mental strength because they give into fear more often than not. Hamlet lacks most qualities of a courage because he is a coward, he over thinks everything that he wants or needs to do and he never actually gets the courage to act upon his thoughts.…show more content…
When the ghost appears in act one, he talks to Hamlet, he tells Hamlet that he was murdered and poisoned by his brother, Claudius and he then asks Hamlet to avenge his death, "Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder" (1.5.25) but because of his fear and cowardice Hamlet does not take action as the ghost requested.
