STUDY OF GRINDING PROCESS Grinding is used to finish work-pieces with high surface quality (e.g., low surface roughness) and high accuracy of shape and dimension. As the accuracy in dimensions in grinding is in the order of 25 microns, in most applications it tends to be a finishing operation and removes comparatively little metal, in the range of 0.25 to 0.50 mm depth. However, there are some rough applications in which grinding removes larger volumes of metal quite rapidly. Thus, grinding is a diverse field. 2.1 GRINDING MECHANISM Figure 2.1 Cutting actions of abrasive grains Grinding is the most common form of abrasive machining. It engages an abrasive tool whose cutting elements are grains of abrasive material known as grit. These grits are characterized…show more content…
2.3 CLASSIFICATION OF GRINDING MACHINES Grinding machines are also called as machine tools. A unique feature of grinding machines is the rotating abrasive tool. Grinding machine is employed to achieve very high class of surface finish with accuracy on the work-piece. However, the emerging new generation grinding wheels and grinding machines are characterized by their rigidity, power and speed, which enables high efficiency deep grinding (often called as abrasive milling) of not only hardened material but also ductile materials. Conventional grinding machines can be broadly grouped as : Surface grinding machine Cylindrical grinding machine Internal grinding machine Tool and cutter grinding machine 2.3.1 Surface grinding machine: This machine may be similar to a milling machine and used mainly to grind flat surface. However, some types of surface grinders are also capable of producing contour surface with formed grinding
