Throughout the story “The Outsiders,” S.E. Hilton repeats the symbol “eyes.” Eyes really do have meaning, and that’s why she included it several times throughout her novel. Eyes symbolize the personality traits of each character. For example, the story states that “Cherry’s eyes were green.” Pony’s eyes were also green. Cherry and Pony both are very understanding, trustworthy, and overall nice people. This must mean that green eyes are a symbol for a good personality. Also, Darry and Dally had pale blue eyes. In the beginning of the book they were both considered tough, strong minded, and intelligent. Though, at the end of the text, Ponyboy made a comment that really stood out to us. He states, “His eyes didn’t look so pale anymore.” This
