Keystone species is plant or animal that plays an important role in an ecosystem. Anything happens to the keystone species, will affect other species in the ecosystem. If the keystone species increase in number or go extine, the habitat or ecosystem will change dramatically according to the change of keystone species. The stable and healthy condition of keystone species is the central factor to maintain a healthy ecosystem. Among many different keystone species, gray wolf is concerned as significant keystone species that need to be protected in order to maintain a healthy ecosystem in many places. Gray wolf belong to canid family. This kind of animal is distributed in different places throughout the world. However, according to the case…show more content…
As DBIO says, gray wolves can eat any kind of animal that they can hunt for food such as, little mouse, moose, elks or caribou. However, deer is the animal that wolves have mostly compete with bears, lions and lynxes. (web) The main food for wolves is herbivore. Thus, the basic food chain that wolves get involved is: wolves feed on herbivores, herbivores feed on vegetation, vegetation get energy, nutrient, water, air for it life. Because gray wolf eat herbivore in different species while other animals also feed on those herbivores, so the food web is somehow complexed. It is interconnection of food chains. Gray wolves usually park in group to support each other for safety and hunting for food. They can get together to bao vay their preys. This way of cooperation can make the preys unable to escape. A group of wolves also has more power to fight against other animals that want to take away their preys. When the wolves finish their eating, other animals and birds can get benefit by having the leftover. Because gray wolves are the predator that feed on herbivores, so they help to control the population of herbivores in the ecosystem. Thus, it balance the the biodiversity and food web in the ecosystem, so it keep the ecosystem healthy and
