Kyle Waznis Professor Michael Nolan HIS 293 12/10/15 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson, author of the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo died of a heart attack before the first book of his best-selling trilogy was published. He dedicated his life to revealing the violence, racism, and extremism that filled his liberal home country of Sweden and I bet that he would have considered his early passing a worthy sacrifice. Larsson was born in Northern Sweden and was raised by his grandparents. At the age of 15, Larsson witnessed a gang rape and did not interfere. The rape victim’s name was Lisbeth, which is the name of a very powerful secondary protagonist in his first novel, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. All of his works tend to highlight the corruption in Sweden and Larsson also liked to give the female characters an intelligent and unstoppable side to them. To…show more content…
One thing that Larsson was trying to say about Swedish society is the epidemic of violence against women and how these twisted philosophies and governmental failures allow such acts. Just from the title of the novel you can tell so much about what Larsson was trying to get across to his readers. The original title was translated in English to Men Who Don’t Love Women. Authorities would not usually punish assaults against women and women knew that so they rarely even reported them. Violence against women occurred so much that it was viewed like an accepted part of the Swedish society.
