George D. Dayton discovered target in 1902. Dayton was a native New Yorker who worked in banking and real estate for several years. After exploring Midwest markets, Dayton decided to purchase land on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis, with hopes of an opportunity for growth. Dayton founded “Dayton Dry Goods Company”, which is known today as Target Corporation. After his death in 1938, Dayton’s son and grandsons took leadership of the company. His son became president of the Dayton Company and overtime expanded into a nationwide retailer. On May 1sr, 1961, the Dayton Company opened a new discount chain store, “Target Corporation.” According to the store’s president at the time, Douglas J.
