At this day in age, technology is advancing faster than we could have ever imagined. Not only have we been creating new technology with cellphones, ipods, and laptops but scientists and medical researchers are always finding new methods to fight diseases. Medical researchers want to make things more efficient for present day and for many years to come. For years now, scientists have been researching different genetic disorders and want to find a way that could possibly elimiate this concern. There is also a technique called germline engineering that would allow the gene to be transformed through one individual and it would then pass on to future generations (Hurlbut). DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the genetic material in humans and all living organisms. It is made up of bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine) that determines the information for building and maintaining an organism (What is DNA). “An important property of DNA is that it can replicate, or make copies of itself. This is critical when cells divide because each new cell needs to have an exact copy of the DNA present in the old cell” (What is DNA). It began in 1990 and its goal was to provide researchers with tools to understand the genetic factors of human disease. It sped up the process of medical discovery around the world. Today it has allowed researchers to find more than 1,800 diseased genes and now scientists can find the genetic disease in a matter of days compared to taking years to figure out the genome sequence by hand (NIH).
