In the film From Caligari to Hitler, Siergfried Kracauer states that, “the films of a nation reflect its mentality in a more direct way than any other artistic media” (5). It is argued that films of an era can reflect the popular psychological culture of a population from the sometimes obvious but other times subtle use of popular motifs and symbolism in society at the time. There is one film in particular that fits directly into this statement by Kracauer, and that is Charlie Chaplin’s film Modern Times. In this film Charlie Chaplin plays the iconic character of Little Tramp who always seems to be down on his luck trying to survive in a more modern industrialized world following the Great Depression. However before we are introduced to our main character the Little Tramp, we watch the president of the factory go about his morning activities. We see him working on a puzzle but very quickly become frustrated with this venture so he moves on to the newspaper. However it looks as if he is reading the comic pages of the paper in an attempt to pass time. His secretary then comes in and puts down what looks to be an anxiety pill of some sort. From there the boss scans through his new technology screens and checks in on his employees to make sure they are hard at work in the factory and not slacking off. This very first scene reflects the feelings of many of the hard working class citizens of the time in a very direct way. The working class saw their bosses as very lazy and undeserving of their large paychecks as the scene shows they just sit in their office and play with puzzles and read comics when they are bored. As well the workers are constantly under supervision and work long hours just to receive a very minimal paycheck while their boss sits in his nice comfortable office bossing them around from the screen in the factory. From here we are introduced to our main character the Little Tramp and get a deeper understanding of the day-to-day lives that the workers would
