4. Throughout Jeannette’s life, she learns many lessons along the way that change her life for the better. One of the main themes in the story is people may make many mistakes throughout their life, but by forgiving them you make yourself free of anger, judgment, and bitterness. Forgiveness is one of the main themes in the story because even though Jeannette’s parents neglected their children in many ways and should’ve been punished, but the kids understand that forgiveness is for themselves as well as for their parents. As long as they harbor bitterness in their hearts for how they were raised, they will never find the contentment they need.
