Fake heroes: The significance of sound in creating heroic portrait in Flags of Our Fathers. The Flags of Our Fathers (Clint Eastwood, USA, 2006) tells us a story about the marines who raised the USA flag at the battle of Iwo Jima during the World War II. The process of raising the flag was photographed and became an inspiration for thousands of Americans. The individuals portrayed in the photo became national heroes and were exploited in various military fund-raising campaigns. A hero is “a person who is admired for having done something very brave or having achieved something great” . Even though the flag raisers denied being heroes, the nation perceived them as such. I assume that there is no need for non-diegetic sounds, as the atmosphere made by the diegetic cheering and music is enough to create the desired mood in the sequence. Also, diegetic sounds feel more genuine and it would be very unnatural to hear a non-diegetic sound while the crowd is happily cheering and the overall mood is very convivial. When there is more than one source making sound at a time, the one which relates to the shot is isolated in comparison to other sounds. For example: when there is a shot of people cheering, the sound of encouraging shouting and clapping is heard more clearly than the song which is performed off-screen. Alternatively, when the shot of the singers is taken, the cheering of the crowd becomes a background sound. The short dialogues are isolated as well, because naturally it would be hard to hear individuals talk when the surrounding people are shouting, clapping and taking photos. The accurate isolation of sound sources helps the viewer to focus on specific sounds and distinguish them from the rest.
