• On April 19, 1775, 70 militiamen assembled on a field in Lexington, Massachusetts. These men had been trained to attack by Captain John Parker, their commander. • The news that the British were coming had quickly spread, and the men were prepared for battle. They ended up meeting the British soldiers, resulting in the first battle of the Revolutionary War. The Intolerable Acts: • Following the events of the Boston Tea Party, the British were very angry, and in 1774, Parliament passed many laws to reprimand the Mass. All colonies helped Mass. by sending food and money. The committee of correspondence also called in all colonial delegates to brainstorm what the next plan of action should be. The First Continental Congress Meets: • In Philadelphia during 1774, all colony delegates met (minus Georgia), and came to the decision to ban all trade with Britain until the Intolerable Acts were taken away. This meeting was called the First Continental Congress. Georgia also agreed to this decision, despite not having been at the meeting, and the meeting asked for all colonies to start training troops. • This meeting was a pivotal moment. Although most people did not want to ask for independence yet, they were determined to keep their rights as colonists The colonial delegates agreed to .meet again in 7 months, however fighting with Britain had already begun by that time. Between War and Peace: • Hoping that the trade boycott would make Britain repeal the Intolerable acts, the colonists were disappointed, when Parliament didn’t repeal. They expected the few fights to be short, but one of the very few people who thought war was approaching was Patrick Henry. Patrick Henry presented his speech on the possibility of war to the House of Burgesses in 1775. The Midnight Ride: • Spy networks were being built to keep colonists informed on the British decisions and activities, and vice versa. The spies that Britain had informed General Gage that Masss. was keeping arms and ammunition in Concord, and that Hancock and Adams were in Lexington. So on April 18, 1775, Gage ordered soldiers to arrest Hancock and Adams, and destroy all the other supplies in Concord. • The Sons of Liberty had a course of action in the case of this scenario, so Paul Revere and William Dawes were given the responsibility to notify colonist that the British were coming. To notify Charlestown, Revere would light one lantern to signify that the Brits were coming by land, or two lanterns in the case they were coming by water. • Revere and Dawes followed the British troops, and met up with Dr. Samuel Prescott in Lexington. However Revere and Dawes were stopped by a British officer, so instead of them, Prescott delivered the message to Concord. Lexington and
