There are many catastrophic events that happen almost every day in our world. Many aren’t as bad as others but the one that occurred on April 18, 1906 was one that affected many people. The San Francisco earthquake and Fire of 1906 had a huge impact on the city and its San Francisco. The event occurred at 5:12 a.m. with the shock lasting surrounding (Earthquake). April 18 will always be remembered as a life changing day for the people and state of about 28 seconds. The earthquake ruptured along the San Andreas Fault for about 290 miles (Earthquake). The epicenter occurred offshore about 2 miles from the city, near Mussel Rock. The shaking paused for 10 minutes then returned stronger for 25 more seconds (Earthquake). The earthquake was felt from Coos Bay Oregon, to Los Angeles, and as far east as central Nevada. The magnitude of the earthquake was estimated to be between 7.8 and 8.3 (News). Within 30 hours of the earthquake’s first jolt, a fire ruined most familiar San Francisco’s buildings. Thousands of people died when the South-of-Market tenements collapsed. The blaze burned engulfed the vast majority of the city. The chief of the fire department had died during the earthquake. He was found in the rubble and there was no one to take charge of the fire. Within 30 hours of the earthquake’s first jolt, the fire ruined most of San Francisco’s familiar buildings (MCEER). Fires burned for 3 days and 3 nights (News). They were more catastrophic then the earthquake itself. The Navy contributed to putting out fires by running water lines and providing water to the city’s fire department for their steam engines (News).
