Female offenders go through many things in their lives before becoming incarcerated. Female offenders are unlike any offenders in the prison system. In their early parts of life, female offenders might have gone through things such as some type of abuse, loss of a parent or both, or some type of violence through their family. Female offenders murder more family members than any other prison population, are very different from the male offender’s population, and go through many challenges while being incarcerated. Female offenders are more likely to kill their child, husband or boyfriend, or family member than other prison population. Twenty-four percent of female offender’s victims were under three years old. Comparing female to male offenders, it is shown that eight percent of men kill their own family members unlike female offenders who kill thirty-two percent of their family members. Female offenders could have problems from before entering prison or while being in prison. Female offenders could have faced problems such as abuse, poverty, or being a part of an unstable family. Three-fourths of female offenders are mothers. Those offenders may not be able to see their children, because they are too far from their children or they can not afford to see them. Female offenders who are mentally ill or violent offenders do not receive the proper treatment that they need while in prison. In the prison system, there are not enough educational programs that females can learn and be successful when they get out of the prison system.
