The Route of Blood Flow Through the Heart Blood, which is deoxygenated blood first enters the right atrium from the superior and inferior venae cava. It empties the oxygen poor blood into the right atrium. The blood then is pumped through the tricuspid valve, when this gets full it forces the valve closed. It then forces the semilunar valve open. This allows the blood to enter the pulmonary trunk. The pulmonary trunk branches and forms the pulmonary arteries, this is what carries blood to the lungs. The carbon dioxide is released and oxygen is picked up. The blood from the lungs, through the pulmonary veins the blood enters the left atrium.
