a. Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of personal factors. Personal factors are those which are specific to the child and determined by their genetic makeup. One or a combination of these can effect a child’s development. These can be broadly categorised in the following ways. Health Problems – This covers a range of health statuses and may impact a number of areas of development. If we consider a common condition such as eczema this can cause a child to have low self esteem which effects their social development. Children may also experience a long term illness which may result in time spent in hospital. Visual impairment may limit a child’s ability to participate in some of the activities on offer. Hearing loss may cause speech and communication delay. b. Environment – This refers to where the child is living and the access they have to development opportunities. For example, a child who does not have access to an area to play may be slower to physically develop. Poverty and Deprivation – factors associated with poor housing, larger families and poor diets can adversely affect a child’s development. Family background and environment – there are multiple ways family background can influence a child’s development. These include such factors as birth order and learning from older sibling(s).
