In Chapter 6 of Experiencing cities Hutter discusses the changing parts of the New urban cities. Some of these ideas were the urban political economy, the LA school, and privatopia’s. In particular the section on privatopia really intrigued me. The reason for this is because with the advancements in technology continuing to explode it seems like people are becoming less and less social. With walling people into gated communities its almost as if we’re forcing people to continuous progression of anti socialism. “The growth and development and the decline and fall of cities do not occur simply by happenstance. Social, economic, and political key factors are key factors, and the city must be understood within the context of social structures and processes of change that benefit some at the expense of others.”(111) Our cities today are a breeding ground for money. But it's not just about money, power as well as owning land can create success in these urban areas. A person who is a perfect example of urban success is Donald Trump. While not so popular, Trump has made a fortune off buying land in places like New York City, and controlling the urban areas. This city is extremely culturally diverse while also extremely segregated. To me there are 3 different parts of LA. The part where the Hispanics live, where African Americans live and where white people reside. I can think of no other city that has as much racial segregation. This idea really intrigues me. Even without race playing a factor at all, people naturally segregate themselves. If you ever look at say a prison yard. While this example is more on the extreme side it’s a perfect example of our society. We tend to spend time with people who talk like us, act like us, and look like us.
