Stories were originally created to teach lessons to younger generations. Many of these lessons were about morals and told what could happen if a person acted in a wrong manner. One well known moral is referred to as the Golden Rule. This rule is mainly about the idea that a person should treat others as they wish for others to treat them. The poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge called “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” can be seen to convey the idea of the Golden Rule. This poem also represents the idea that the Golden Rule can correlate with religious views. The Golden Rule does not have to in any way relate to religion. He would visit the crew during the prayers and they would feed him. Once the Ancient Mariner chose that “with my cross-bow I shot the Albatross” (81-82) trouble occurred. The belief was that they only hit the bad weather at first because of the bird. This idea and the fact that the Ancient Mariner killed an innocent animal caused for spiritual uproars. The events that followed were viewed as being punished by a higher spirit. The punishment for all included dehydrations to the point of death for all but the mariner. The ancient mariner was face with have to accept the fact that when the arrow of the crossbow was release and killed the Albatross, he also chose to kill all of his crew. The ancient mariner chose to relate the sin of, “the Albatross about my neck was hung”(141-142) with the cross for Jesus. Christianity views the cross as a selfless act when the ancient mariners act was selfish. There was no proof of a correlation between the Albatross and the weather and even though the ship was on the path to their destination the decision to act out in a selfish way lead to the death. As retaliation the Ancient Mariner was forced to see the death he caused and continue to live with the hope of the ability to be forgiven through teaching others this lesson that lead to the death of his crew and the life he
