The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, is a flashback that revolves around the Finch family. It takes place in the early 1930s in the small town of Maycomb, Alabama. In Maycomb, racism and discrimination can be seen everyday. Though many of Maycomb's civilians are racist, the Finch family is not. As a matter of fact, the Finch family employed a black cook, Calpurnia, in their house. Calpurnia was very strict on the Finch children, Jem and Scout. The first part of the book is mostly about the kids' childhood and how they are seeking to find Boo Radley. Some believed that Boo was dead, while others believed that he was simply a mentally ill person. Part two, however, is revolved around a trial were Jem and Scout's father, Atticus, defends Tom Robinson, a black civilian. Mr. Robinson is accused of having…show more content…
The Ewell family was not a very trusted family for they were very poor, dirty, and overall unwanted people. During the duration of this case, Jem and Scout began to mature and started acting like serious young adults. Although Mr. Robinson was innocent, he was convicted, angering the Finch Family, especially Jem. Through this case, Jem began to see life from another perspective. Jem is a dynamic character, for he matured throughout the novel by losing his innocence, becoming more thoughtful of others, and changing his perspective on life. To start off, Jem is a dynamic character because his childhood ended when he lost his innocence. For example, when Jem walked out of the courtroom, indignant of the court's decision to convict Mr. Robinson, "It was Jem’s turn to cry. His face was streaked with angry tears as we made our way through the cheerful crowd" (273). This quote demonstrates how Jem experienced the harsh reality which caused his innocence to deteriorate.
