Think about a time you were hurt by someone. Did you show compassion? Did you forgive them? Perhaps you even took revenge. This is the dilemma Kumalo and Jarvis faced for much of Cry, The Beloved Country. However, we see that by learning compassion and how to let go of the past from Kumalo and Jarvis’ experiences, we can improve our lives as believers Early in the 16th chapter, Stephen is traveling to Pimville to confront Absalom’s pregnant girlfriend. As he speaks to the young girl, Kumalo becomes increasingly more frustrated until he loses his temper and shockingly even thinks about raping the young girl. Kumalo is hurt by this and Msimangu apologize for his hurtful words. After this, we see for the first time Kumalo showing compassion and he quickly forgives Msimangu. Here we have the opportunity to learn that as easily as we can hurt someone with our words, others can hurt us with theirs. Jesus showed so much forgiveness for us, why should we not forgive others? If we don’t, and we hold a grudge, how are we supposed to fulfill our calling in life and lead people to Christ? Like C.S. Jarvis isn’t ready for change, and when his son is shot down by a black man, we all expected Jarvis to immediately place blame on the black boy. However, as Jarvis begins to uncover who his son truly was, we slowly see the transformation of James Jarvis. If we can take one point away from Jarvis’ experience, it's that we must be open to change and we must always be ready to forgive. The times we most need to forgive others are totally unexpected and often catch us off guard. Who knows what would have happened if Jarvis wouldn't have forgiven.
