Social Identity Theory Homelessness

The theories that I am going to apply to this research question are social identity theory and vulnerability theory. In Weaver’s article she argues that homeless children are vulnerable in a lot of different ways, and their vulnerability is apparent is several different settings. “An exploration of useful concepts to combat child homelessness reveals that vulnerability theory is valuable because is seeks to transform the poverty dialogue from the consideration of factors that lead to homelessness to the common needs of all people. Social identity is a person’s sense of who they are based on their group memberships or status is society/community. “Tajfel (1979) proposed that the groups (e.g. social class, family, football team etc.) which people belonged to were an important source of pride and self-esteem. Groups give us a sense of social identity: a sense of belonging to the social world.” (McLeod) I feel like youth that are the ages of 12-18+ years of age are at a difficult time in their lives, they are just hitting puberty, leaving elementary school and entering middle school; which is a whole new world, and they are trying to adjust to everything. These youth are at a period in their lives where they think that they are always right and that parents don’t know anything so it is a constant battle between pre-teen to teenager with their parents. If a child is being abuse in some way by their parents this can be an even worse time for them and they can potentially run away, be kicked out, etc. While children are turning into teenagers, and then into young adults, they are trying to figure out their places in life and where they belong. If it is a difficult struggle, difficult enough for the youth to think they can no longer handle the situation anymore they may be likely to run
