Bravery is not the lack of fear but the ability to move forward in spite of fear. While bravery was crucial for survival during WWII other traits were equally as important. Almost all of the characters in "The Book Thief" showed bravery throughout the duration of the novel, some more than others. Markus Zusak incorporated a variation of attributes for each character. Whether it was their courage, resilience or curiosity, Zusak always portrayed bravery as an important aspect. Bravery was evident in various ways, whether it was visible in a nine year old girl or in a skinny Jewish fist fighter. Zusak's extensive knowledge of bravery is demonstrated throughout the book.
