Applying to college, most people do it at some point in their life. However, most people do not realize their application has the possibility of being denied for something as frivolous as race. Race should not be a deciding factor in the college admission process because it does not deal with a person’s merit, discriminates against certain races, and enforces harmful stereotypes. The college admission process is when colleges examine students’ credentials to decide who gets to attend. Colleges consider many things when deciding whom to admit; for example, race, academics, and extracurriculars. This can cause problems when two people have the same academic success but only one gets admitted based on race. Merit is the quality of being particularly good or worthy, especially so as to deserve praise or reward. A person’s race does not determine the quality of their character, nor does it establish their quality of work. The fact that merit alone does not decide whether a person is accepted or not is baffling. In fact, ‘two-thirds of Americans believe college applicants should be admitted solely based on merit’. Secondly, race should not be considered in the college admission process because it discriminates against certain races. ‘Most elite universities give extra weight in the admission process to underrepresented minorities’ which essentially takes away some weight from other races. For example, Asian-Americans have the lowest acceptance rates at selective private universities despite having the highest GPA and SAT score average. ‘The focus should never be just on the student’s self-reported race or ethnicity’, because when colleges focus solely on race, they end up having discriminated against at least one other
