Sound Bender is the story of a twelve year old boy, Leo Lomax, whose parents die in a tragic plane crash. Leo is trying to cope with the loss of his parents when he and his younger brother Hollis were taken to live with their uncle Crane, a mysterious man they have only met twice. On Leo’s thirteenth birthday, he receives a package from his father, who has passed on, who has seemingly planned not to be able to give this gift to Leo in person. Leo opens the package and reveals that he was lied to his entire life about his birth. Instead of being born in New York, he was born on a tribal island and was given his name, which means “Bender of Sound”. This is a horrible situation to be in and my mind cannot even begin to fathom how depressed anyone in that position would feel as the hardest situation I have had to overcome was the death of our family cat, not both of my parents. Despite having this tragedy occur, the brothers are taken to their uncle crane’s home. Uncle Crane was a mysterious figure to the two boys, they believed he was rich, and had only seen him two times in their lives. Upon being picked up the boys are driven to their uncle’s house in the slums. Immediately their perception of a man they know so little about is shattered and they learn that he’s not too fond about kids. As if these two traumatizing experiences are not horrible to experience, the experience for these two kids gets even worse. On Leo’s thirteenth birthday, he receives a package from his dead father, explaining that he has been lied to his entire life about where he was born. His parents told him that he was born in a hospital in New York, but he discovers that he was born on a tribal island, half a world away.
