The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are both responsible for regulating and implementing drinking water safety guidelines (FDA).While the EPA regulates municipal, or public drinking water, the FDA regulates bottled water (FDA). Public drinking water includes wells and tap water systems owned by towns, schools, factories, hospitals and restaurants. FDA regulations for drinking water are specific to all brands of bottled drinking water. Since more and more people drink bottled water, the FDA enforces regulations to ensure quality and safety standards of bottled drinking water. According to the FDA, bottled water producers are required to: • Process and transport bottled water under sanitary conditions; • Protect water sources from contaminants such as chemicals, water disinfection byproducts, bacteria and other impurities; • Use quality control procedures to ensure safety of water; • Take samples of both the source water and the final product to test for contaminants. Other FDA regulations define the maximum levels of contaminants permitted. These FDA limits are stricter than EPA limits (Environmental Working Group).…show more content…
