The Scarlet Letter and The Count of Monte Cristo are both romantic historical fictions, while one takes place in the 1600s and the other in the 1800s; the books have a greater connection with their common themes. The Scarlet letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and was first published in 1850. The novel follows the life of Hester Prynne in 17th Century Boston, Massachusetts. Her struggle to live a hypocritical society that bashes her buts loves a sinner of the same crime and a “leech” of a doctor that has a vendetta to fill. The Count of Monte Cristo was written by Alexandre Dumas and was first published in 1844. This novel follows the life of a man named Edmond Dantès and his adventures to get revenge. One, Hester is punished was a crime of passion while her fellow sinner is protected until the end. Even when Dimmesdale admitted his crime, he died shortly after; he never faced the consequences of his crime. Second, the fact that Hester was out casted for simply falling into lust and passion with a man she loved, while Mistress Hibbins held witch ceremonies. The governor’s household covered up her crime of worshipping Satan and doing a crime far worse than adultery. The simple facts that Mistress Hibbins behavior goes unpunished forces people to think was Hester’s lovemaking or are the deeds of figure heads that really constitutes the great threat to society. The lack of justice in Count of Monte Cristo is easy to see, the fact that Dantès was sent to prison for deeds he never did and that the government official sent him there to protect himself.
