Ernest Rutherford Throughout the nineteenth century there were many scientists that contributed to the quantum theory. Among them was the scientist Ernest Rutherford. Rutherford was born on August 30, 1871, in Nelson, New Zealand, “the fourth child and second son in a family of seven sons and five daughters. His father James Rutherford, a Scottish wheelwright, immigrated to New Zealand with Ernest's grandfather and the whole family in 1842” (Nobelprize.org). Rutherford’s childhood helped contribute to him becoming a world-renowned scientist. He received his first science book at Foxhill School at the age of ten.
