A leading Mexican Military Leader by the name of Emiliano Zapata Salazar, fought for a change in the ruling system of Mexico during the Mexican Revolution. The Revolution lasted from 1910 to 1920 and was fought with the belief that a new system that allowed the farmers that worked the land to gain its wealth should be executed. Emiliano Zapata was a strong advocate for this policy and fought his entire life in the attempt to make it a reality until his death in 1919.
Emiliano Zapata Salazar, later becoming known as Caudillo del Sur, was born on August 8, 1879 in the town Anenecuilco in the northern region of the state of Morelos, Mexico. He was the ninth out of ten children that Gabriel Zapata and Cleofas Jertrudiz Salazar raised. Zapata went to school until his parents died when he was 17 years old, when he quit school and became a part of the Mexican army. Years…show more content… Zapata then joined Francisco Madero, who wanted to overthrow current president Porfirio Diaz and tricked Zapata into thinking that he would execute land reforms after they succedes. Zapata’s Liberation Army then took control of Cuautla after six days of battle on May 11, 1911. President Diaz then resigned after the consecutive defeats in Cuautla, to Zapata, and in Ciudad Juarez, to Pancho Villa and Pascual Orozco. Victorious at last, Zapata approached Madero with the original agreement of the land reforms, however, he then realized that that agreement had been a lie. Zapata then continued his fight, now against President Madero. Zapata then launched the Plan de Ayala, which stated a president would be appointed through elections and that one third of the stolen land and would be returned to the farmers. In 1913, President Madero was killed by General Victoriano Huerta, who took control of the country until Venustiano Carranza overrun him shortly
