The Taming of the Shrew is a 17th century look at gender roles and relationships. Two sisters, two totally different personalities, yet both wanting to be loved. Bianca is the baby and all she wants is a relationship, for the 17th century she is the biggest boy crazy teen. Katherine a strong-willed and out-spoken young woman, she knows what she wants and she knows that nothing will get in her way from getting it. Both women looking for love, only Bianca is a little more aware of that fact than Katherine. 10 Things I hate about you is a modern day twist of Shakespeare’s play Taming of the Shrew. Still a story about two sisters wanting love and one being a little more aware than the other. Bianca and Katerina Stratford live with their overprotective father that has a strict set of rules about dating. I loved that the spin in The Taming of the Shrew was that Lucentio had to pay Bianca’s father, yet never actually had to pay because the two eloped. And in 10 things I hate about you Patrick was the one that let Katerina change him because he ended up loving her so much. The fact that The Taming of the Shrew is so old and harsh towards women kind of bothered me, but I do understand that it was the 17th century and that is how things were back then. Both are romantic comedies, and both have their serious moments. From the witty banter that goes on between characters to the talks that only sister can have. In 1999 the movie 10 things I hate about was released and the world was introduced to Katerina and Bianca Stratford. Also to Patrick Verona and Joey Donner. These characters showed us the hard parts of trying to build relationships, and they showed the joy of having someone you can spend time with and hopefully one day even
