One of the most famous engineers and astronauts is Ellen Ochoa. This woman had a successful education in school as a child to a young adult. She had an extraordinary career as a scientist. Her current work as a director in NASA is inspiring to others. Ellen Ochoa is a powerful woman in the world of science and technology.
Born on May 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Ellen was the third of five children. Her father, Joseph Ochoa, was a retail manager and her mother, Roseanne Ochoa, was a homemaker. Young Ellen went to Grossmont High School in La Mesa, California. She attended San Diego State University, studied physics, and received her bachelors in 1980. She was a group leader in photonic processing in intelligent systems technology branch located at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. This was her first occupation in NASA. She became chief of the same branch six months later. Ellen Ochoa was chosen for astronaut class in January 1990, and identified as one in July 1991. Her first flight was on the orbiter, Discovery on April 8, 1993. As a mission specialist, she was responsible for the payload, the Spartan 101 satellite. A satellite that makes 48 hours of independent solar notes to determine how solar wind is produced. She deployed and retrieved it by operating a robotic arm. In November 1994, Ochoa joined the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science- 3 (ATLAS- 3). She was payload commander on this mission. During the ten- day Discovery mission, she docked on the International Space Station (ISS). Ellen went on her fourth mission in April of 2002. This eleven- day mission required the installation of S- Zero Truss. Her endeavors and accomplishments as an astronaut have left a larger mark on the improvements NASA made in
