Poets are infamous for their hidden messages in their works of literature. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, born in 1806, in England, is one of the most influential poets of all time. Her poems and their meanings transcend even after her death. She is known for utilizing currents events to create deeply meaning poems that not only take a stand on the issue, but inspire the audience to look at society in a different light. Born on March 6, 1806 in Durham, England, Browning was the oldest out of twelve children. Her father “rigidly controlled their lives” (“Elizabeth Barrett Browning Biography”), but it was all due to his love for his children. She published An Essay on Mind, and Other Poems (1826), in which she dedicated her love for metaphysics and religion to (“Elizabeth Barrett Browning Background”). Her family was fairly due to the fact that they owned a large plantation. Browning was highly against the use of slaves, and resented her father when she made her siblings work at the plantation. During this time, she was working on a piece called The Seraphim and Other Poems(1838), which emphasized her strong Christian values (“Elizabeth Barrett Browning”). She was also fascinated by the struggle for Italian independence, in which she wrote Casa Guidi Windows (1851) and Poems before Congress (1860), in order to win support for the Italian cause (“Elizabeth Barrett Browning Background”). Later on she wrote about a heroine who was fighting for social reform, but was stopped short because of male dominance. She wanted to bring attention to current issues and she had ideals that not many people of that time shared, especially those held by women.
