Sandra Cisneros’s purpose in “Eleven” is to evoke memories of youth and its follies in readers. Adolescents endure caustic hardships similar to Rachel’s, in which they desire to attain the wisdom and respect of their elders, yet lack the experience to have such characteristics. Inversely, being as young as a toddler or infant would not bring the infliction of judgement. Thus, having qualities of seniority or infancy could provide solace in times of such hardships. Through Rachel’s perspective, the audience witnesses how being a juvenile, people seek to escape from the cruelty of age, physical or behavioral, that defines who they are.
