Dr. Spielvogel addresses “pre-humanism” in his book, Western Civilization. The first type of people he discussed existed in the Paleolithic, or Old Stone Age. He believed that what distinguished humans from animals was the ability to make tools. His book also tells us that humans at that time were hunters; they did not know how to domesticate animals or grow crops. They also didn’t know how to build shelters, so they often sought shelter caves. Dr. Spielvogel then moves on to talk about people who existed in the Neolithic, or New Stone Age.
