I believe dogs are very important for many ecosystems. Dogs have been a necessary part of life for humans throughout history.
Domesticated dogs do not fill a niche in wild ecosystems. However, wolves are the ancestors of modern domesticated dogs, and wolves fill the predator niche, eating rodents, rabbits, deer, and other animals. Domestic dogs eat similar foods to their wild ancestors. When domestic dogs become wild, they often fill the niche of a scavenger. Other dogs like african wild dogs, fill in the niche of a scavenger.
