In Amy Tan's short story " Two Kinds". Jing-mei is developed through direct characterization. Jing-mei doesn't want to be a prodigy. Her mom wanted to make Jing-mei be a prodigy even though Jing-mei doesn't want to be. She presents test, taking her examples from stories of amazing children. Also, she got magazines about remarkable children from people whose houses she cleaned and she would look through them all. Jing-mei hated that her mom does to her. When her mom told her about lesson plan which she has to do, she felt as though she had been sent to hell.
