When someone mentions a thief, many think aggressive, rude, or that if you are a thief you will never change. But, in “Thank You Ma’am,” By Langston Hughes, those opinions are changed. Roger, the protagonist, is a would-be thief. At about eleven o’clock one night, he runs up behind Mrs. Jones and tries to snatch her purse. He needs the money to buy blue suede shoes. Although he failed to get the purse, he is taught a valuable lesson and gets the shoes at the end. Through direct and indirect characterization, it is shown that Roger is polite, shy, and determined.
