Differences And Similarities Between The Endorcist And The Last Exorcism

The Exorcist (1973) and The Last Exorcism (2010) are two movies that define horror movies in the exorcism category. Though close to a 40 year time gap in the release of the movies, their plots, characters, and special effects are similar. For example, both storylines are considered one of the most terrifying movies in their time period; the characters correlate directly to each other in both of these films; also special effects used such as objects flying around a bedroom. The two movies have very similar storylines in that they develop into an exorcism, and how the exorcism occurs. For example, Nell Sweetzer and Regan are both introduced as teenagers who are feeling ill. Doctors in both The Exorcist and The Last Exorcism diagnose the children with mental disorders such as schizophrenia and split personalities. Both of the parents, Louis Sweetzer and Chris MacNeil, look beyond the diagnosis to possession. A priest is needed for an exorcist, so the parents request priests, Father Karras (The Exorcist) and Cotton Marcus (The Last Exorcism), to perform the exorcisms. On a side note, with The Exorcism being released in 1974, graphics of such special effects might not be as clear and believable as The Last Exorcism, due to an extreme update in technology. For example, Regan’s face might be considered to have a less believable face of possession than Nell’s. The types of objects used in the exorcism scenes are virtually the same. This is shown by Father Karras and Cotton Marcus using simple exorcism tools such as: holy water and a cross. Many of the objects being disturbed in the room of exorcism are used in the same way.
