CHAPTER 2 -ABOUT DIABETIC PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Peripheral Neuropathy is a painful and debilitating condition caused due to some damage to the peripheral nervous system, or the complex network of nerves which connect the central nervous system (the spinal cord and the brain) to the rest of the body. An estimated 25 million Americans are suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy, and a staggering 17 million of them (roughly 70%) are diabetics. Before looking into Diabetic peripheral neuropathy, let’s get to what diabetics exactly is and what are its possible causes are. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy is a group of nerve disorders that are directly caused due to complications related to diabetes. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy may strike at any age, regardless of gender, age, or, for that any racial or ethnic background. People with diabetes who have trouble controlling their blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity face an increased risk for developing Diabetic Peripheral…show more content…
Symptoms vary from patient to patient and may include abnormalities in the motor, sensory and autonomic—or involuntary—nervous systems. The first symptoms are, most often tingling, numbness or (mild or severe) pain in the feet. Sometimes, mild symptoms might go unnoticed for years in the beginning and increase in severity over the years. Sometimes, the onset of pain may be severe and sudden. Though not directly associated with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, some people also experience depression. Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy can often lead to the loss of reflexes, especially at the ankle, and cause changes to the way that you walk. Foot deformities, like midfoot collapse, and hammertoe can occur. Again sores and blisters may develop in the foot that may be numb to the pressure or injury.
