Dementia and Hearing Loss The purpose of this paper is to discuss the correlation and significance of hearing loss and dementia. The articles cited in this paper are, “Hearing Loss Linked to Dementia” (Griffin, 2015), “ Hearing Loss Linked to Accelerated Brain Tissue Loss” (Lin, Resnick, Kraut, Ferrucci, and An, 2014), and “Dementia, Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer’s Disease” (Pichora-Fuller, 2015). These articles were chosen because of their relevance to my topic. Each of these sources gives a reason, and a better understanding, as to why dementia and hearing loss correlate. This is a brand-new understanding with audiologists and doctors across the country. Being hard of hearing tends to isolate people from others: When you have to struggle to converse, you’re less likely to want to socialize in groups or go out to restaurants. And being socially isolated has long been recognized as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia” (Griffin 2015). This is a huge realization made from researchers everywhere. Being hard of hearing is not something that makes talking to others easier. This article really explains how dementia and hearing loss do correlate with each other. Being socially isolated will result in dementia. This is why hearing needs to be checked.
