Pop music is a genre of popular music, which originated in its modern form in the 1950s, deriving from rock and roll. Two contemporary songs that would fall into the “pop” category would be “Crush” by Selena Gomez and”Crush” by David Archuleta. Both songs are extremely similar, including their song title, genre of music, and nearly the name meaning behind “Crush”. Gomes and Archuleta still retain their unique voice and perspectives while living in the limelight of Hollywood. The differences in chart performance displays how two artists can turn two songs about the same topic and have one more successful than the other. At ten years old, he won the children's division of the Utah Talent Competition leading to other television singing appearances. When he was twelve years old, Archuleta became the Junior Vocal Champion on Star Search 2. In 2007, at sixteen years old, he became one of the youngest contestants on the seventh season of American Idol. In May 2008 he finished as the runner-up, receiving 44 percent of over 97 million votes. In August 2008 Archuleta released "Crush", the first single from his self-titled debut album. The album, released three months later has sold over 750,000 copies in the U.S. and over 900,000 worldwide. David’s success with his album is uncanny. He reached number two on the Billboard 200 chart within just three month due to the success of his song “Crush”. David contrasts Selena by being more sensitive and rather than dismissing his crush, he pines for his lost love and wondering if perhaps he created the problem. Selena is far more masculine in her brushing off the situation and the emotions in her song "Crush". Both artists subvert their gender stereotypes within their pieces. Archuleta’s “Crush” says “All I ever think about is you” and clearly demonstrates his strong feelings throughout the song.
