There’s a new phenomenon in the baking world that has changed the dessert menu for everything from birthday parties to weddings. People all over the world have traded in their traditional layer or sheet cakes for delightful little treats called cupcakes. These palm-sized delicacies have been around since the 19th century, yet they have recently become one of the most popular desserts in the US.
Cupcakes originally evolved in the United States back in the 19th century. They offered a big change from traditional baking methods because of the time saved in the kitchen. Cupcakes were often called “number cakes”. You could easily remember the recipes by using simple numbers… “one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, four eggs, one cup of milk, and one spoonful of soda”. Today’s…show more content… There are now hundreds of bakeries that make nothing but cupcakes! We have local stores like Cupcake Charlie’s in Plymouth that offer mouth-watering cupcake flavors. We are no longer tied to simple vanilla and chocolate cake options. These delicious mini cakes can even be made with fillings and they pile them high with sweet frostings.
The cupcake industry started thriving somewhere around 2005. That’s when the first cupcake bakery, Sprinkles, opened in Los Angeles. It was called “the progenitor of the haute cupcake” by the Los Angeles Times. Once it became popular and started making money, more and more bakeries started opening up in cities throughout the United States. It seemed that these new, more upscale cupcakes were now appealing to all types of people and their preferences. They are delicious, they are profitable, and they appeal to both our imagination and creativity, delighting our culinary senses.
