These tangy, tart berries were an essential part of the Native Americans diet, as far back as 1550. Cranberries were vital ingredients used in pemmican, which sustained them during the winter. Pemmican is a blend of fat and meat, such as deer or bison and cranberries. Natives also made poultices from cranberries when they were wounded with poison arrows. Pilgrims had the right instinct when they consumed cranberries to ward off scurvy. They just didn't know cranberries were rich in Vitamin C.
