1. Explain some contradictions within the American Revolution, which were explained in the class and the text. The American Revolution, originally an anti-tax movement, expanded the country’s view to pursue the right to control their own property. During the eighteenth century, this included human beings as “property” also. The American Revolution manifest their beliefs for a slavery-based country; however, this is one of the biggest contradictions within the revolution. Although the revolution presents the notion of “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,” this challenges the tradition of slavery and it’s inhumane treatment. During the Revolutionary War, many slaves were tricked into joining the war for the price of freedom.The idea of freedom became a strong motive for many black slaves. Although the victory of the war became an American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence falsely advertised the phrase, “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Blacks remained outcasted and unequal. 2. Explain the significance of “Shay’s Rebellion” as discussed in the class and the text. Shay’s Rebellion was a rebellion of farmers, against the state government, in Massachusetts led by a former officer of the Continental army named Daniel Shay. The rebellion was due to the high taxes the farmers had to pay, and majority of the farmers could not pay the taxes because they were in debt. This led the farmers to form together and march towards West to close the courts and present the problem of high taxes. Some of the courts the farmers were able to close were the Court of Common Pleas and the court in Worcester. The closure of the courts were eventually stopped due to the state militia.
