“There are lots of ways to tell the truth, and Chuck Barris has avoided most of them in his book, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (Stein, “Lying to Tell the Truth”). There are multiple things left out, that would be in a regular autobiography. Many have wondered when the book first came out if it was an actual autobiography, and the movie didn’t help solve this. In addition, numerous people have questioned if Barris actually worked for the CIA or was crazy. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, the film based on Chuck Barris' autobiography, doesn't seek to reveal the truth of Barris' life but seeks to entertain its audience. The movie starts off with Chuck Barris naked in a hotel room talking about his life. It then shows him as a geeky guy who is almost like a sex maniac. Getting into fights at bars and drunk all the time. He starts to work at NBC and fakes his resume to obtain a higher job, but his first television show gets shot down. He also falls in love with a girl named Penny. This is when the CIA comes to find him. They send Jim Baryd and his life changes. He goes to be trained by the CIA and then goes to Mexico and kills a drug lord. Around the same time his show gets picked up and put on the air and he gets to produce it. On the first trip he meets Patricia who helps him and gives him a microfilm. He also falls in love with her. Barris goes back home and buys a new house with Penny. He then picks up another job from the CIA. Chuck later creates a show called The Gong Show. Chuck’s allies start to get killed and he becomes increasingly paranoid and is constantly on edge. He meets Patricia and they exchange tea and she is poisoned trying to poison Chuck. In the end Penny and Chuck get married the same day as Patricia’s
