Comparing Telemachus And Odysseus In Homer's The Odyssey

Upon reviewing Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, one can compare both Telemachus and Odysseus by analyzing the difference in their maturity as when Odysseus shows his feelings towards his son, but some similarities such as them both being courageous; as when Odysseus decides to taunt a Cyclops, and then when Telemachus stands up to suitors in his home. One can see they are both courageous, but Odysseus consistently shows he is the main hero fo the story and his courage surpasses that of Telemachus. Odysseus and Telemachus are the same bloodline, Telemachus being Odysseus’ son. Throughout the book the two develop new traits or change their traits, but for the most part they keep the same ideals. One of the biggest for the two is their development in maturity, and it shows throughout the book immensely.…show more content…
A similarity would be that they are both courageous, such as when Odysseus escapes from the cave that the Cyclops trapped him in. He devises a plan to get out of the cave, and it works. However, when they run away from the Cyclops, Polyphemos, Odysseus courageously taunts the Cyclops, saying: “O Kyklops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a caveman’s hands? How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? … Zeus and the gods have paid you!” (IX.519-523). Telemachus also displays his courage when Athena gives him the reassurance he needs. He courageously and bravely, kicks the suitors out of his house: “You must leave my palace! See to your feasting elsewhere,/devour your own possessions, house to house by turns” (I.430-431). Thanks to Athena, he gains the courage to kick the suitors
